What is the GMAT?

The GMAT is the Graduate Management Admission Test.  This test is administered by the Graduate Management Admissions Council and is designed to assess the abilities of students applying to MBA, Master of Accountancy, and Master of Finance programs.  More than 2,100 universities and institutions use the GMAT exam as part of their criteria for admissions.

The GMAT is comprised of four sections:

The exam begins with a short essay known as the Analytical Writing Assessment.  In this essay, the test taker is required to read a short argument and then write about the strengths and weaknesses of this argument.  This essay section is designed to evaluate your ability to communicate your ideas clearly and evaluate arguments critically, handy skills in the business world.

The Integrated Reasoning section of the GMAT evaluates your ability to review information presented in multiple formats and from multiple sources. This section will also test a combination of math and verbal skills.  A standard integrated reasoning question may include a written description, a data chart and a visual graph.  This is the newest section of the GMAT exam and universities are still evaluating how to use its results.

The GMAT math and verbal sections are a computer adaptive test (CAT).  This means that GMAT test questions are not pre-set in advance.  The test bank includes a large pool of questions.  The GMAT begins with a question of average difficulty.  If it is answered correctly, the next question will be slightly more difficult.  If it is answered incorrectly, the next question will be slightly easier.

The Math and Verbal scores are considered the most important portions of the GMAT.  These two sections are combined to provide an overall score out of 800.

  1. Thanks a lot for such a useful blog! Competition is getting higher these days, you have study a lot for cracking these exams. I have also joined the Best LSAT Prep course for my LSAT preparation. I also look for practice papers online because I know it is going to be difficult to score well.
